“Women should be safe”

Burmese women have exposed numerous rape cases perpetrated by the Burmese soldiers during offensives against insurgents and also campaign against domestic violence. The pioneering effort to bring rape cases into the world attention was done by Shan women who exposed 173 cases of rape that victimized 625 girls and women from 1992 to 2001.

The day after the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize which went to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Charm Tong, one of the nominees for the 1000 Women for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize said that it’s okay because many women leaders, unknown before, have emerged. Their work was finally recognized. Charm Tong was one of Marie Claire’s Women of the Year in 2004 and she was also awarded the Reebok Human Rights prize in May this year.

A prominent writer from Myanmar (Burma) had fled to Thailand because she wants to write freely. While in exile, she continues to write poetry and short stories that revolve around three themes - what is happening in Burma, what is happening while she is in exile and what should the people in Burma prepare for.
