Wriggling A Fortune

Benguet farmers may be hard put because of the smuggling problem of vegetables from China. But trust them to keep finding ways to turn a fortune. This time, the mulberry trees that flourish almost like wild plants in the region, are promising good cash for them. Now they gather not the dark berries for jams or pies, but the mulberry leaves to feed silkworms. It's called sericulture, and with the assistance of the Fiber Industry Development Authority (FIDA), Benguet has slowly become the pioneer and cradle of silk production.
