History
Women's Feature Service began in 1978 as a
UNESCO-UNFPA initiative for the UN Decade for Women. Until 1991,
it was a project of Inter Press Service (IPS) Third World News Agency.
WFS became an independent news agency with headquarters in New Delhi,
India, where news and features are edited for international release.
Today this has become the only link with other bureaus, where each
is an independent, registered, non-profit organization in their
country. WFS offices still maintain links, forming a network of
editors and writers for its international news service.
Highlights
WFS with its international team of writers
and editors covered international conferences such as UNCED in Rio
in 1992, producing daily newspapers at the Human Rights conference
in Vienna in 1993, ICPD in Cairo in 1994, Social Summit in Copenhagen
and the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, Habitat
II in Istanbul and the Food Summit in Rome in 1996, and ICPD+5 at
the Hague in 1999
